CLASS LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Challenge may vary depending on the teacher. Always remember to listen carefully to and honor your body by going at your own pace. Yoga is ”non-competitive”.

Each teacher brings to you his or her own unique experience with an emphasis on one or more classic styles. Below you will find the descriptions of class levels, on the website you can learn more about each teacher’s style.

Pain Management / Restorative (Starting April 1, 2008; New class on Tuesdays 4-5:15pm)

A new addition on the Spring 2008 Class Schedule, Nancy Sutton Pierce, RN, Yoga Therapist, will be teaching this gentle, nourishing, and healing class.  This class is for anyone suffering from acute or chronic pain who would like to find other ways of contending with it and tap into your own healing abilities.  This class will be gentle, slow paced, and geared to all those in attendance.  Anyone is welcome unless of course you have an open wound or are contagious.  Other than that nothing we will be doing is harmful or stressful.  On the contrary.  Even if you already have a sustained yoga practice, you might enjoy the addition of a weekly restorative class to round out your personal practice and yoga experience.  No Yoga Experience is Necessary to attend this class.

Beginning

Suitable for beginning students as well as experienced students who enjoy a gentler class. Develop body awareness, learn basic postures (asanas), and proper alignment. Learn yogic forms of breathing and how to sequence breath and movements together, and become familiar with the connection to your physical and energetic body. Beginning Yoga is a powerful antidote to being "stressed out," weakened or fatigued. Allowing the body to be supported in different Yoga poses, both active and restorative postures, with conscious breathing brings balance in one’s energy and a clear calmness to one’s mind.

All Levels
Students of all levels can enjoy this class.

This general class is the perfect choice for students either who have completed the Yoga Intro or those who have prior Yoga experience and are ready for a typically paced formal Yoga class. This class continues to focus on the classic poses, building on the basics with emphasis on alignment of the standing, sitting, and twisting poses. This class will help you achieve a deeper reflection in asana and refine your relationship to your body.

Intermediate
Suitable for intermediate and advanced students. Emphasize strength, stamina, and mindfulness. Must have solid foundation of sun salutations and basic standing postures. Deepen your practice as well as your connection to your physical and energetic body.. This class is for students well practiced in basic postures seeking more of a challenge. These classes focus more detail on alignment, holding of postures, strengthening, and introduction to inversions. Classes will work toward involving breath into yoga postures and finding your yogic “edge”. More challenging postures and our response to them will also be explored.

*Advanced:  Recommended for seasoned students of Yoga.
For the student with many years of practice and comfortable with the more challenging poses such as backbends and inversions. More importantly this class is for the student who is very knowledgeable about their own limitations, special needs and abilities.   It refines and explores yoga with a deep concentration on the physical, mental and spiritual level. Inversions including handstand, headstand, and shoulderstand will be taught as well as continued refinement in all the classical postures of Hatha Yoga.   *Instructor recommendation is preferred before attending.
